Animal Control & Animal Shelter
Animal Control Officers are part of the County Marshal's Office and are primarily responsible for enforcement of laws and ordinances such as animal cruelty and abandonment, rabies vaccination, dangerous dogs, etc. They do this primarily through education and awareness efforts, but they are authorized to issue citations and refer criminal charges when appropriate. Duties also include apprehending stray dogs with the primary goal of returning them home safely, as well as responding to calls involving injured animals.
The Animal Shelter is a state-licensed facility that is co-funded by taxpayers and non-profits. Stray and surrendered animals are housed here with the goal of adoption or transfer to a licensed rescue. Animals up for adoption can be found at the Petfinder link below, and in-person visits are encouraged during business hours or special events.
Please note that feral cats are not accepted for surrender at the Lee County Animal Shelter. These cats cannot be adopted, and residents are encouraged to consider the following alternatives:
- Implement or get involved with an organized trap, neuter, return (TNR) program. Grant funded veterinarians are willing to help by offering services at substantially reduced costs. Such a program should be implemented with a strict DO NOT FEED rule.
- Work with licensed animal rescues and sanctuaries (call the shelter for current resources).
